PATI – Ontario Syllogisms

March 5, 2011

The specific exam for candidates in Ontario is called the Police Analytical Thinking Inventory or PATI.
The exam tests various skills in the PATI including:

1. Map Reading
2. Matching
3. Mathematics
4. Problem Solving
5. Series
6. Syllogisms

Some look at the exam and as what is syllogisms?

If like me you don’t know what this means let me explain.

Essentially it means a logical argument.

An example of this would be “All Mounties know how to ride a horse. I am a Mountie and therefore I know how to ride a horse.”

Why tests for such a thing. Well part of Policing is having the ability to think logically, especially when faced with a chaotic or maybe dangerous situation.
