Benefits of a Second Language

January 22, 2009

Speaking a second language fluently is a definite competitive advantage for police applicants. Each police force has a list of local needs, and language is on top of that list.

As a Police Office, you may have the best training and latest equipment, but none of that matters if there exists a communication gap between the Police and Public. When you speak someone’s language you create an environment of trust and understanding, and therefore can handle any situation more appropriately.

Canada is a nation made of many different nationalities and each culture may have different norms. As a Police Officer if you can speak an immigrant’s language you become a bridge between cultures. This would make your position in the community much more useful.

When applying to a specific Police force, examine where your traits and strengths could benefit the local needs of the community; one trait is the local language.
