Training and Development Is the Best Way of Dealing with Policing Challenges

September 10, 2013

Just like it is important to first train employees before embarking on business operations, it should be the same for police officers. The quality of employees and their development through training and education are major factors in determining long-term profitability of a starting up business. This also applies to the police force. If the police force recruits officers who have good education and offer them good training, it will be assured of producing good staff who will give the best not only to the police force but to the entire nation.

Why It Is Important For Police Force to Adopt the Policy of Investing In Development of Police Officers’ Skills

We appreciate the fact that the police force tries its best to hire and keep good police officers, but it should not stop at this. It should adopt the policy of investing in the development of their skills, in order to increase their productivity and improve their performance at work. In most cases training is considered for new officers; however this is a big mistake that should be avoided if we need to improve the standards of our police force. Ongoing training for existing officers is very important as it helps them adjust rapidly to the changing job requirements. Policing is a kind of job that officers are not permanent at one situation. Since different work stations have different challenges, the officers need to be given varied trainings in order to deal with different challenges.

There are different ways in which the officers can be trained and developed as they continue operating. The most common but very useful include seminars and workshops. Organizing seminars and workshops for police officers will help them to improve their policing operations. Different training methods can be used to ensure that training does not interfere with the daily operation schedules of the officers;

On-the-job training method is very flexible as it can be delivered to the officers while they perform their regular jobs.

Off-the-job training can be implemented for the officers who are not on duty maybe on leave or on off days. The techniques include lectures, programmed instruction and laboratory training, television conferences or discussions, special study, films, case studies, simulation and role playing.

Orientation method is good for officers who are still new in the job in order to familiarize them with the job.
